Description

As heat resistant and drought tolerant as the species, this variety is reliably hardy and provides interest year round. Purpureum is the same in flower color and form to the straight species; however, it boasts beautiful true dark purple leaves in winter. Foliage persists throughout the winter months. A small but extremely tough plant, it forms a dense carpet of plant material which spreads to cover a good-sized area. Small dainty, airy white flowers bloom in midsummer. Green foliage is tinged with purple in the summer months. Be aware when planting that the amount of sun and water this plant receives also affects the color of the foliage. An outstanding choice for green roofs, this variety has also worked particularly well for us in our live plant retaining walls.
