Our Gentle llamas & Our Land
Our llama herd has diminished this year. As the nursery has grown, we felt a need to let others who could give them more attention than us take some. Others have givin in to old age. Now there's only one llama, Ishmael, left.
Llamas are gentle and relatively friendly
animals. Before returning to horticulture full time, Ed Snodgrass has
spent many years dedicated to educating at risk youth as educational director at
the Living Classrooms Foundation in Baltimore. In this capacity, he first
worked hard to reach out to many people of differing
backgrounds. One way was to use the llamas in an educational setting;
taking the students on hiking and camping trips along nearby Dear Creek with the
llamas carrying part of the burden. This gave the students an opportunity
to experience new natural environments and to interact with the animals.
Since then the llamas have generally retired. But the herd is always ready to welcome visitors to the farm. One of our new additions, Ashley, is shown here on her first day with us.
