Scientists in the departments of Horticulture and Agricultural and Biological Engineering are cooperating in a major research effort involving the efficacy of Green Roofs.  We have been working in cooperation with JSP International, the worlds largest supplier of bead foam used in the manufacture of bumper energy absorbing systems.  Research funding is also provided by a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Grant.

After two years of testing with ground level modules, we have purchased six small utility buildings.  Our objectives will be a replicated study involving building heat flux, storm water runoff, and nutrient disposition.  Three buildings will have green roofs – planted with Sedum Spurium – and three without green roofs.  Each building is insulated, fitted with temperature sensors, a storm water collection system, and a watt-hour meter to determine energy usage.  Similarly, each building will be heated and air conditioned.  A graduate student from Agricultural Engineering will coordinate data collection and analysis.  From this study we hope to develop design tools for engineers and architects designing Green Roofed buildings.

Plant studies will also be included and will focus on heat and cold tolerance, growth, and transpiration efficiency.  We also plan to evaluate different system components and how they perform in flat and sloped roof situations.

University of Connecticut

In the Northeast, WESTON has also established an informal partnership with the University of Connecticut (UConn) and an educational program to address the relationship of land use to natural resource protection. The Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) program was established at UConn under three groups: the Cooperative Education System; the Natural Resources Management & Engineering Department; and the Connecticut Sea Grant College Program. NEMO is further supported by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), USDA, NOAA, EPA, NASA and the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

Through a series of meetings, WESTON and UConn representatives identified common interests related to storm water management and the benefits of green roof systems in retaining storm water in urban areas. WESTON agreed to construct two pilot-scale GreenGrid™ installations for their use in monitoring storm water retention, and for use in education about green roofs. UConn's cooperative education center is located in Haddam, Connecticut (south of Hartford) and the pilot GreenGrid™ project is the first of several green technology projects NEMO has planned for this site.  The plants for this project were donated by Emory Knoll Farms.

You can learn more about UConn's NEMO program by visiting http://www.nemo.uconn.edu.
