Penstemon barbatus ssp. coccineus

Description

This species is an excellent choice for attracting hummingbirds. Native to the Western US, this drought tolerant plant flowers in early summer. Flowers are a brilliant scarlet-red. Foliage grows in basal rosettes featuring green, lance-shaped leaves. Like most perennials used on green roofs, this plant will benefit from growing in a deeper soil profile, or where the green roof media has been mounded. It will need regular water to become established on the roof.
