Green Roof Stars

Plants in this section have proven to be particularly hardy, resilient, and aesthetically pleasing in a green roof environment. They will thrive in a wide range of hardiness zones, soil depths, and climatic conditions. A mix of ground covers and accent plants are included.

  • Allium ‘Summer Beauty’
    A beautiful Allium variety with strong upright foliage showcasing vibrant green color and thicker leaves. Masses of light pink flowers.
  • Allium schoenoprasum
    A strong performer on a green roof. Extremely drought tolerant. Creates a good visual accent and has culinary use as well. Tolerates some shade.
  • Allium senescens ssp. montanum var. glaucum
    Interesting foliage plant adds texture to a green roof with spiraling blue-green leaves. Flowers give much-needed color later in the season. Tolerates some shade.
  • Dianthus carthusianorum
    Bright magenta blooms on tall blue-green stems. Narrow grass-like green-blue foliage is clump forming.
  • Mixed Flats – Best Selling Mid-Atlantic Blend
    Extensive green roof mix. Plants selected by Ed Snodgrass specifically to perform well in the Mid-Atlantic region (US). Tolerates some shade.
  • Mixed Flats – Leafy Greens
    A blend of robust, mat-forming species that provide fast coverage. Great base for perennial accents. Particularly useful in maintenance situations.
  • Phedimus takesimensis
    Fast-growing with substantial foliage. Holds its leaves much longer into the winter than similar species. May remain green all winter in mild weather. Shade tolerant.
  • Sedum aizoon
    A great accent plant, adds height and structure to an extensive roof. Tall with yellow flowers late in the season.
  • Sedum album
    A staple plant in the green roof industry. A green carpet with white flowers in summer. Bright red foliage in winter.
  • Sedum hybridum ‘Immergrünchen’
    Dark green foliage with a profusion of bright gold flowers. Keeps its foliage through much of the winter. Shade tolerant.
