Accent Plants

These plants can be used to add color, texture, height, extend flowering season, and to attract additional pollinators. They are most effectively used with a base of sedum to create the main cover for the green roof.

  • Schizachyrium scoparium
    Tall Mid-Atlantic native grass with blue-green foliage that turns red in fall and winter. 
  • Sedum selskianum
    Often mislabeled in the trade. Mounds of green foliage and yellow flowers in midsummer. Great heat, cold, and drought tolerance. Deciduous.
  • Sedum telephioides
    Known as Allegheny Stonecrop this is our tall Native Sedum, found in the Appalachian mountain range.
  • Seseli gummiferum
    This interesting accent plant goes by the common name of moon carrot. It is a pollinator magnet and, though not a native plant, is a host for the larvae of the eastern swallowtail butterfly.
  • Silene uniflora ‘Compacta’
    Accent with gray-green foliage, good mounding habit, and an interesting flower structure.
  • Talinum calycinum
    Also known as Phemeranthus calycinus, Talinum calycinum is vigorous and showy. Incredible bright pink flowers over needle-shaped leaves. Blooms every afternoon, from early summer until the first frost. US Native.
  • Teucrium chamaedrys
    Bees love this purple-flowering accent plant.
  • Thymus serpyllum
    Spreads nicely into a dense, green mat. Purple flowers late in the season. Bees and butterflies love this plant. Holds foliage in winter. Shade tolerant.
